Not every girl wants to get up in the morning and curl or straighten your hair. Then, the thought goes through your head to do a messy bun instead, because how hard can a messy bun be? Personally, I have attempted the famous “messy bun” many times, and it either looks like a lump on the top of my head, or a rat’s nest. So many videos on the internet makes it look so easy when it really isn’t. Lucky for both you and I, I’ve found a helpful step-by-step video that actually works! You have hit the jackpot on finding the perfect way to create a messy bun without wanting to pull out your hair.

1. Pony Tail

I am about to unleash the perfect messy bun recipe. First, brush your hair and pull your hair into a high ponytail. Make sure that when you secure your hair in your hair tie, that it is held tightly and secure. Also, make sure that the ponytail is centered on your head and not to the side of your head, because that just wouldn’t look right with this look!

2. Twist Pony Tail

step 2

After your hair is in a lovely high ponytail that is located on the top of your head, twist your ponytail in one direction. By twisting your hair in one direction, it allows your ponytail to become one thick strand. When I’ve tried creating a messy bun without twisting my hair, it was more difficult than this messy bun tutorial viewed on this page.

3. Put Into Bun

step 3

After twisting your hair into one strand, take the twisted ponytail and wrap it around the base of the pony tail. Wrap the ponytail around the base of the ponytail, and remain it twisted. This step of the video creates the base for the most desired messy bun. I would have never thought to do this, but after trying it personally, it helps my bun become more secure and easier to work with.

4. Secure Bun

After you’ve wrapped your ponytail around the base of the ponytail, it is time to secure it. When you secure the bun with another ponytail, do not feel the need to perfect it and make it need. This step does not need to be neat, it is only in place to secure your bun down. It would not be good if your messy bun fell out as soon as you left your house. We want this hairstyle to last as long as you’re out!

5. Add Volume

Since the messy bun look is suppose to be messy, the hair surrounding your face and the bun can not be tightly to your head, or very neat.  To avoid the perfect bun and make it messy, pull out the hair that surrounds your face to frame your face.  It can be pulled down like the picture that is shown on the left.  Also, pull the hair out that is being pulled into the bun, so it is looser and adds volume to the look.  While you’re doing that, also pull apart the bun so it is not so tightly secured.  Adding volume is always in the equation when you are wanting to create a messy bun.

6. Secure Bun And Hairspray

How To Do A Messy Bun

While creating the messy bun look with adding volume, you may have some flyaway pieces.  Please do not freak out because if it gets a little too crazy, it can always be tamed.  One of the tools that we can use for that is hairspray! Hairspray does wonders and so do bobby pins.  To secure and shape your bun, use bobby pins to do so.  I can attest that bobby pins are my lifesaver, and I’m sure every other girl will feel the exact same.
